Club Fishing Rules

Introduction

Fishing rules in Killin come under the River Tay System is covered by a Protection Order, under the Aquaculture Freshwater and Salmon Fisheries (Scotland) Act 2007. This means there is a statutory requirement for all persons wishing to fish for any freshwater species to obtain written permission to do so prior to commencing to fish.

The permission to fish for Freshwater Species comes under three categories, all of which are within the law.

  • Being a member of this Club and carrying a membership card at all times,
  • llows the bearer to fish all banks and loch surfaces, which come within the access agreements of Riparian Owners, with whom the Club has a written arrangement.
  • Purchasing a fishing Permit from a Ripanan Owner with whom the Club does
  • not have an agreement, allows the bearer to fish that particular beat.
  • All non-members and visitors must purchase a permit to access and fish any
  • of the water within the Club’s jurisdiction.

Failure to follow any of the three clauses is against the current Law, and falls within the Criminal Law Jurisdiction, and can result in charges being brought, equipment being confiscated, and transport impounded.

Access agreements with Riparian (Owners) set out the hours during which fishing is permitted, and the methods allowed. It is important for all members to abide by and practice the approved methods, and ensure visitors to do so by setting the example.

Although the Club promotes the use of artificial fly angling, other methods are allowed, as detailed on visitor permits. The month of April, being recogni
sed as the spawning period, is closed for all coarse species.

Salmon angling is available on the club’s River Dochart beat as set out in the constitution; details of other options for salmon fishing are provided below. Notices are clearly displayed for the assistance of visitors. It is an offence to deface or otherwise tamper with these notices, and is punishable under the Law.

Anglers are required to produce their cards when requested by KBAC members. Freshwater Wardens, Honorary Bailiffs and TDSFB Bailiffs, and Police Officers.

Fishing rules in Killin — Exclusion Zones

Fishing rules in Killin. There are areas of both Loch and River Bank which – for reasons of Privacy or Safety – are not included in access agreements. Private Dwellings and Grounds, Moorings and Landing Stages, Dam Walls, Intake and Outlet points on Hydro Electric Installations, Weirs and Walls at Power Stations and all bridges are examples of exclusion zones where fishing is not permitted.

There are obvious sections of difficult or precipitous banking where access is dangerous and fishing is therefore not advised for reasons of safety.

During periods of other sporting activities such as Deer Stalking and Grouse Shooting, temporary restrictions will be introduced for reasons of safety and to allow others to enjoy their chosen sport. Notices will be displayed indicating the dates when access will be restricted.

Membership ID Cards

All members are required to have the annual membership card with them at all times when fishing. Where appropriate, Car Parking tickets should be left on full display in vehicles.

Parking

Fishing rules in Killin are for members who are reminded to park with care at the area beside the River Lochay Slipway, when using boats. When bank fishing, anglers must not park across access to farm roads or fields, and must not use passing places as parking areas. Always leave your vehicle secure with the parking ticket clearly displayed on the inside.

Access to Fishing

The club is dependent on the goodwill of landowners and riparian owners. It goes without saying that members should fully comply with normal Countryside code conventions in regard to use of designated access routes, securing of farm gates, damage to crops and property, disturbance of livestock, control of pets etc. Exclusion zones must be respected at all times.

Safety

All members are fully responsible for their own health and safety at all times and must comply with any KBAC instructions/guidance relating to safety.

Use of Club boats

When using club boats, members (and guests) must observe the following :-

  • The club maintains several boats for the use of club members (subject to pre-booking); these will be available for use between 9am and 5pm.
  • Club boats are for the use of members only, guests (i.e. non-KBAC members) are permitted but must be accompanied by a club member at all times and guest details (name/address) must be recorded in the Boat Bookings log at time of booking
  • Note : Where a club boat is booked in conjunction with the WI Salmon right, guests are not permitted (i.e. all persons in the boat must be KBAC
  • members)
  • A Life Preserver will be worn by all boat occupants at all times.
  • The maximum number of persons occupying a club boat is restricted to 3.
  • Any damage no matter how minimal to be reported to the Boat Convenor.
  • Any damage caused due to negligence may incur a charge for repair.

Camping

The club is not in a position to authorise overnight camping; members/visitors intending to camp must obtain authority from the landowner.

Litter and Fires

As per the Country Code – all litter to be taken home, whilst camping stoves

are permitted, no open fires are to be lit at any time.

Trout & Char Season

15th of March to the 6th of October

Areas of fishing 

(subject to change dependent on negotiation with riparian and land owners!

  1. The surface of Loch Tay, by boat, from the West End of the Loch to the Lawers Burn on the North Shore, and the Manse Burn (Allt a Mheinn) on the South Shore.
  2. The North Shore of Loch Tay, East of the out let from Finlarig Power Station to the West bank of the Lawers Burn. Excluding 50 metres either side of the private landing stages at Edramucky, Rhynachulig, Carrie, Craggantoul and Balnasuim Farms, and the harbour area at Highland Lodges.
  3. The West Shore of Loch Tay from the wicket gate on the bank of the River Lochay, to the West entrance to the Private Dwellings at Pier End. Fishing from, and landing on the two Islands is not permitted, except in situations of emergency when temporary landing is allowed.
  4. The South Shore of Loch Tay from the East March of Kinnell Estate, to the West Bank of the Manse Burn. Excluding the area of bank within the
  5. Firbush boundary, the Private Dwelling know as Fiddlers Bay, and from the wire fence West of the Ardeonaig Boys Brigade Centre to the wire fence on the East bank of the Ardeonaig Burn, which area is private dwellings and a harbour with moorings.
  6. The surface of the River Lochay, from the Pier Road Bridge, downstream, and that of the River Dochart from 50 metres east of the Power Lines, downstream to the junction of the two rivers, and from that point downstream to the respective entry points to the open water of Loch Tay.
  7. The River Lochay from the head waters, on both banks, downstream to the cattle grid West of High Batournie, on Kenknock Estate, and from the Innischoarach Bridge, both banks downstream to the Bridge of Lochay Hotel boundary, on Bore land Estate. Excluding both banks from a point 500m above, and below, the Lochay Power Station, and both banks from Daldravaig Farm downstream to the walled Summer Garden. From the Pier Road Bridge, on the East Bank, downstream to the wicket gate at the Estuary, and from the Old Railway Bridge downstream to the junction with the River Dochart.
  8. The River Dochart, on the South Bank, downstream from the Alteally Burn to the War Memorial, and on the North Bank from the march dyke with Auchlyne Estate downstream to West boundary of the dwelling known as Spnngburn. From the Railway Viaduct, on the North Bank downstream to the junction with the River Lochay
  9. The Hydro Electric Dams, Lcchan nan Lairige, to the North of Loch Tay, and Lochan Breaclaich to the South of Loch Tay, along with Lochan nan Cat on the Ben Lawers Nature Reserve, and Lochan nan Geadas to the South of Loch Tay.

Times of Access to Fishing

Sunrise to sunset (except where further restrictions have been specified by the riparian owner). No night fishing.

Methods of Fishing. Bag Limits and Size of Fish

  1. 5-fish limit at all times (including all local competitions).
  2. Brown Trout size limit – 10 inches with the exception of hill lochs and dams which are restricted to 8 inches).
  3. Only one rod may be used at any time and this must be hand held.
  4. Junior anglers, accompanied by an adult, may fish by all legal means.
  5. Deliberate trolling on Loch Tay or any part of the navigable Rivers Dochart and Lochay is NOT permitted.
  6. Rods must not be left unattended or supported by any artificial means.
  7. The exception is if an angler is registered as disabled and produces the required exemption parking ticket or similar document, but must be in attendance of the rod.
  8. The removal of Arctic Char is NOT allowed – this species is in rapid decline and should be carefully released as a conservation measure.

Coarse Fish (Pike. Perch. Roach) season –

1st of January to the 31st of March     and1st of May to the  31st of December

Areas of coarse fishing (subject to change dependent on negotiation with riparian and land owners)

  1. The Surface of Loch Tay West of an imaginary line from the Rhynachulig
  2. Burn, on the North Shore to Firbush Point on the South Shore.
  3. The North Shore of Loch Tay from Finlarig Power Station, East to the Rhynachulig Bum, excluding the harbour area at Highland Lodges.
  4. The West Shore of Loch Tay from the wicket gate on the bank of the
  5. River Lochay, to the West entrance to the Private Dwellings at Pier End.
  6. Fishing from, and landing on the two Islands is not permitted, except in situations of emergency when temporary landing is allowed.
  7. The South Shore of Loch Tay from the East March of Kinnell Estate, to the West March with Firbush Point.
  8. The River Lochay from the Pier Road Bridge, on the East Bank, downstream to the wicket gate at the Estuary, and from the Old Railway Bridge downstream to the junction with the River Dochart.
  9. The River Dochart from the Railway Viaduct, on the North Bank downstream to the junction with the River Lochay.
  10. The surface of the River Lochay from the Pier Road Bridge, downstream, and that of the River Dochart from 50 metres east of the Power Lines, downstream to the junction of the two rivers, and from that point downstream to the respective entry points to the open water of Loch Tay.
  11. The banking East of the Auchmore Boathouse to die East march of Kinnell Estate and Cuildochart Cottage.

Times of Access to Fishing

  1. Sunrise to sunset (except where further restrictions have been specified by the riparian owner).
  2. No night fishing.

Methods of Fishing

  1. No Trolling for any species.
  2. The use of any live bait of any fish species is not permitted.

Perch and loach

  1. Bait fishing by use of float method, with worm or maggot, swim feeders permitted. If from a boat this must be anchored or on a controlled drift..
  2. Only one rod is permitted, and a rod rest may be used if fishing from the bank, and suitable size barbless hooks. Bite indicator required if using a rod rest.
  3. No removal of any fish is permitted – all to be returned.

Pike

  1. Spinning/fly-fishing – Minimum 15 lbs breaking strain cast, with wire leader or trace, not less than 300mm. One rod only to be used.
  2. Dead bait – with marine species or with pre packed species from reputable suppliers. Float or Ledgering permitted, from the bank Minimum 20 lbs  breaking strain. Wire trace of not less than 450mm required .A maximum of three rods are permitted to be used by each angler.
  3. All hooks must be semi-barbless and on dead bait tackle, a Minimum of 20 lbs breaking strain, with 450mm Wire Trace, two treble hooks, or double hooks not exceeding size 4 and with a gap between no longer than 150mm. Drop Back Bite Indicators required, and accepted rod rests when   dead bait fishing from the bank.
  4. If fishing from a boat, then this must be anchored or free drifting.
  5. Unhooking equipment must be present at all times. Mat, Landing Net, Forceps and Weighing Sling.
  6. No removal of any fish is permitted – all to be returned.

Salmon

Season -15   of January to the 15th of October

Club access to Salmon fishing. NB the permits at Bridge Park Cottage do not include salmon fishing—however permits are available in the village. The club provides several options for salmon fishing, however, due to varying ownership of these, different rules (which must be strictly observed at all times) apply on each –

  1. Fishing Beat/Area—River Lochay (north bank i.e. Pier Rd bridge to the ‘canal’ at the head of Loch Tay) Ownership—Finlarig Estate Governing Rules/Code—TDSFB Code
  2. Fishing Beat/Area—Loch Tay (salmon right – Wl) Rented from salmon right owner Governing Rules/Code—WLTSFA Code. Note: The Wl Salmon Right is restricted to KBAC members only – i.e. guests are not permitted and thus all persons in any boat using the Wl Salmon Right (KBAC-owned or member-owned) must be KBAC members.
